Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], August 14 (ANI): The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president, KT Rama Rao, on social media platform X, hailed the Supreme Court order, which declared the election of two Members of the Legislative Councils (MLCs) appointed by Congress under the Governor’s quota as invalid.
“The sensational verdict by the Supreme Court, the highest judicial authority in the country, declaring the election of two MLCs appointed by Congress under the Governor’s quota as invalid, has dealt a blow to both the BJP and Congress.
“In the past, when the BJP misused the Governor’s system to obstruct the proposals of two MLCs sent by the BRS, the Congress, which came to power later, recommended two other names while the process was still pending, thereby mocking democracy,” wrote KT Rama Rao on his X post on Wednesday.
Writing further in the post, he mentioned that the true nature of Congress and the BJP is exposed once again.
“The true nature of Congress and BJP has once again been exposed, as they obstructed the candidatures of Dasoju Shravan and Satyanarayana, who belong to marginalised and weaker sections, previously nominated by the BRS. We, on behalf of the BRS, bow our heads and salute the honourable judiciary, which has declared that the undemocratic practices of these two Delhi-based parties, showing no respect for the Constitution, will not be tolerated. Jai Telangana,” read Rao’s X post.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the appointment of two persons, Professor M Kodandaram and journalist Amer Ali Khan, as Members of the Legislative Council (MLC) in Telangana. These appointments were made under the Governor’s quota.
A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta modified its earlier order from August 2024, which had stayed a Telangana High Court decision that quashed the nominations made by the Governor during the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government’s tenure. The BRS, formerly the ruling party, is now in opposition in the state.
The Court has now clarified that any MLC appointments in Telangana cannot be made until the case has been disposed of.
In August 2023, the then BRS-led government recommended the names of Dasoju Sravan and Kurra Satyanarayana for nomination to the Legislative Council. However, then-Governor rejected these recommendations, citing the political background of the nominees.
In their place, the Governor nominated Professor Kodandaram and Amer Ali Khan. This move was challenged in court by the original BRS nominees.
In March 2024, the Telangana High Court quashed both the Governor’s rejection of Sravan and Satyanarayana and the subsequent nominations of Kodandaram and Khan. The High Court had also ordered that the previous status quo be maintained.
Despite the High Court’s ruling, the Congress-led government in Telangana, which came to power after the BRS, reaffirmed the nominations of Kodandaram and Khan. This led to further legal challenges from the BRS leaders, arguing that the original nominees were wrongly rejected.
The appointments of Kodandaram and Khan have been stayed by the High Court until the final disposal of the case. (ANI)
