Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], July 24 (ANI): The Regional Meteorological Department Chennai on Wednesday forecast that over the next few days thunderstorms are expected to increase in parts of Tamil Nadu including in Chennai and its suburbs.
According to the MeT department, thunderstorms and lightning with light to moderate rain are likely to occur in isolated places over the next three days in parts of Chennai and the capital city of Tamil Nadu is expected to have partly cloudy skies for the next three days for the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts of Tamil Nadu.
On July 19, Nilgiri district administration had declared holiday for schools due to heavy and continuous rainfall and reports of landslides in several areas of the district.
District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneru declared a holiday for schools in the Ooty, Gudalur, Kundha, and Pandalu regions of the district, which experienced heavy rain.
The Nilgiris district has been experiencing heavy rain for the last few days, resulting in landslides in many places and fallen trees affecting traffic flow.
Authorities have taken notice of the situation and are working to clear the roads to ensure a steady flow of traffic.
In Kudalur and Bandalur areas, people have been greatly affected as floodwater entered houses in low-lying areas.
The maximum rainfall was recorded in the Avalanchi area at 21 cm, followed by 12.6 cm in the Cherangode region. The Upper Bhawani region received 12 cm of rain, and the Bandalur region received 10.4 cm of rain.
In the Alluri Seetharamaraju district of Andhra Pradesh, District Collector AS Dinesh Kumar also declared a holiday on Friday for all educational institutions due to widespread rains.
According to a media release by the IMD today, scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm and lightning very likely over Kerala and Mahe, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Telangana and isolated to scattered rainfall over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during next five days.
Very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over south interior Karnataka on July 24 and in coastal Karnataka on July 24 and July 25.
Heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Telangana on July 24 and July 25 in north Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, interior Karnataka during July 24- July 26 in Kerala and Mahe, coastal Karnataka during July 24- July 27.
Heavy rainfall has also affected the Kottayam district of Kerala, causing distress among the people as most houses are underwater. The western parts of Kottayam, like Thiruvarppu, Illikkal, and Pathinarilchira, are waterlogged, with roads submerged underwater.
The India Meteorological Department has warned that northern districts of Kerala will receive heavy rains in the next few days. Yellow and orange alerts have been announced in various districts in the coming days in the wake of the rain warning. (ANI)
